Stratification vs. Concentration

Skittles are made of ingredients that are prone to dissolve in water. They also do it quickly, so you have neat science right away. Our BRCVPA campers discovered that candy dissolving science is a fun way to test out a variety of liquids and candies. They found that the temperature of the water impacts the rate at which it dissolves.

They were also able to answer the question, "Why don’t the colors mix right away?" While digging around for information, they learned about a term called stratification. The immediate definition of stratification is the arrangement of something into different groups, Water stratification is all about how water has different masses with different properties and this may create the barriers that you see among the colors of the candies.

Still other sources talk about how each skittle has the same amount of food coloring being dissolved and as they concentration of this color spreads out similarly they don’t mix when they meet up with each other.

What do you think?

The Floating Ping Pong Ball

6/29/2018

Our BRCVPA campers discovered that the Floating Ping Pong Ball is a wonderful example of Bernoulli’s Principle, the same principle that allows heavier-than-air objects, like airplanes, to fly.
Bernoulli, an 18th century Swiss mathematician, discovered something quite unusual about moving air. He found that the faster air flows over the surface of something, the less the air pushes on that surface. That means that the air pressure on the object is lower than average.
The air from the straw, as you blow through it, produces the levitating ball phenomenon using Bernoulli’s Principle. The fast air moving that you are blowing around the sides of the ball is at a lower pressure than the surrounding, stationary air. If you look closely, you’ll see that the ball wobbles while it is levitating in midair. The ball is attempting to leave the area of low pressure, but the higher air pressure surrounding it forces it back into the low pressure area.

BRCVPA's Brownie Troop 10665 and Daisy Troop 10536 met up for a pinch pot pottery-making session at Throw Me Something Pottery Studio. The Daisy Troop is bridging up to Brownies, and this was part of the process. All girls who attended earned their pottery badge and created monsters out of clay. They pre-glazed them, and we will pick them up after their time in the kiln. Thanks to Katie Goodlife and Throw Me Something for helping our girls earn their badge!

Congratulations, BRCVPA! During the June 21st EBR School Board Meeting, BRCVPA was recognized for being the top elementary school in the district, and second overall, for percentage of teachers who are Google Level 1 Certified. This certification is for educators with an understanding of the key features of Google Apps as well as an understanding of how to meaningfully use technology in the classroom. We are so proud of all our staff who took the time to grow professionally in order to increase digital literacy and digital citizenship in the classroom.

Boy are we we excited about this treat!
