MATH AND SCIENCE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTĀ

Ms. Boudreaux, Ms. Carley, Mrs. Richard, and Mrs. Hebert represented BRCVPA this summer at the EBR/LSU Math and Science Partnership (MSP) Project. During the workshop, they strengthened their knowledge of common core models, strategies and best instructional practices. They engaged in lively math discussions both as teachers, and as students, and learned how to better facilitate math discussions in the classroom. On the last day, they presented on common student gaps in understanding, and offered strategies and activities to help close those gaps. The math team is excited to work together from Kindergarten all the way up to 5th grade to boost student achievement in mathematics at Baton Rouge Center!

Orff Certification. . .by mrs. de silva

This summer I had the opportunity to attend an Orff Level 1 Certification course at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. This was such enlightening and exciting experience. I have taught using the Orff Schulwerk process in the past using what I learned from workshops and conferences, but what I had were only bits and pieces. During the 2 week course I was given the chance to improvise, create and compose both music and dance. I was taught the elements of dance as well the basics of recorder. We composed and performed pieces that combined the orff instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, small percussion etc), recorder, dance and voice. Children like to play as well as sing and the use of the orff instruments leads to active listening and participation. In working with the instruments, we work as an ensemble and the students must learn to work together, an essential life skill. Every day of the course my mind was opened a bit further and new connections made. I can’t wait to bring improvisation (both movement and musical), singing, playing, and creating to our students at BRCVPA in a bigger, more comprehensive way!

GO FUND MS. SAVANT, PLEASE?

Dear BRCVPA Friends and Families,

We are a technology world! I want to be ahead of the game and teach my Kindergartners all that I can. I graduated from LSU with my masters degree in elementary education and have taught Kindergarten for the past twelve years. I have spent a significant amount of my own money over the years, but I simply can't afford this project.

The Sharp Class Interactive Display and accessories will cost $3500 for my classroom.  I hope you can help fund this project for our future leaders. To see a video of the touch board, go to http://youtu.be/dPMhgHx8ZoA

The touch board allows up to four students to write on the screen at the same time using touch pens or fingers.  My job is to always keep my students engaged in the lessons. With the touch board, this will not ever be an issue. I will appeal to all learners and my students will really benefit from this type of technology.  I teach at a very diverse school and not all of the children have access to technology at home. Their success and love of school is my focus and I know this touch board can help me reach my goal.

Thank you,
Ms. Kelly Savant, Kindergarten Teacher
