Black Belt on BRCVPA's Campus

12/22/2016

Sami has been promoted to Black Belt in Training in the Korean Martial Art of Han Mu Do.  He received his belt on Thursday December 15, 2016.  It is a Black belt with a red stripe.  Sami has been learning Han Mu Do since he was 5 years old at Kimm’s Institute of Self Defense in Baton Rouge.  He has been very disciplined, attending classes 3-4 times per week since he started.  We anticipate he will be testing for his black belt in April of next year.  If he is successful, he will be one of the youngest students at Kimm’s Institute to become a black belt at the age of 8 years old.

We love celebrating the successes of our students! When Mrs. Miller ran into Jack and his family celebrating his newly-earned first degree black belt status, she insisted that we share it with the school. We were thrilled to do so. Way to go, Jack!

Zydeco Sky from Daniel Dancer on Vimeo.

*Double click the video so it opens in full screen*
Our BRCVPA students came together as human paint drops to recreate a piece of artwork that celebrates Louisiana music and culture. Dressed in color-coordinated school t-shirts, the students used landscaping materials and their own bodies collectively to produce a piece of art that can only be seen in its entirety from above. The art piece, entitled "The Accordion Player," was originally produced by artist Robert Grieve (1955). The image was plotted out on the ground using flag markers and spray paint, then filled in with mulch, sand and finally the children to complete the living artwork.

The project leader, Daniel Dancer, travels all over the world educating students about environmental responsibility, and teaches them to use their "sky sight" to see through the eyes of all beings and through the eyes of future generations. The students were able to see how each individual can come together as one to create something amazing.

It seemed the weather might delay or even cancel the project, but there was a 25-minute break in the rain that allowed all 435 students, 60 faculty and staff members, and several parent volunteers to quickly form the piece, which was photographed from above by Paul Charbonnet, co-owner of Atmosphere Aerial Photography.

We would like to recognize the generous donations of landscaping materials by Louisiana Nursery and Clegg's Nursery, and the tireless efforts of our dedicated parent volunteers!
