Fourth graders are reading The Watson's Go to Birmingham - 1963. To prepare for the novel and to build background knowledge, students played a Digital BreakoutEDU game. Clues to open the locks to break out were found in the epigraph of the novel, in Dr. King's I Have a Dream speech, in the soulful song of Sam Cooke, Change is Gonna Come, and in a timeline of progress. The students were deeply engaged in the texts and the documents, and when they finally broke out, well, the photo of Ben D. says it all.
