Ms. Adkinson, 4th Grade Science and Social Studies teacher, and Mrs. Elston, Creative Writing teacher, spent a summer afternoon at You Be the Chemist, a STEM workshop sponsored by the Chemical Education Foundation and Dow. They separated salt and pepper, using static electricity from a balloon, catapulted marshmallows to explore force and motion, and explored the expansion properties of sodium polyacrylate, the absorbent polymers found in disposable diapers. They even made a paperclip float, utilizing the surface tension of water. Ms. A and Mrs. E can't wait to introduce students to these fabulous hands-on engineering and design challenges.
