Our BRCVPA Destination Imagination teams have been invited to Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee this May! The competition, billed as the “World’s Largest Celebration of Creativity,” will include more than 1,400 teams of students from 45 U.S. states and 14 different countries competing in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) themed challenges.
The two teams from BRCVPA were awarded the opportunity to compete on this global stage after taking 1st place in the state DI competition on Saturday, March 4 in Bossier City, LA. This is the first time the school has fielded a DI team and the first time they competed at the state level. The BRCVPA teams are also the only teams from Baton Rouge to be invited to Global Finals. The teams competed in DI’s engineering challenge (“Drop Zone”) and science challenge (“Unlikely Attraction”). In “Drop Zone,” students were tasked with engineering a structure that could withstand weights being dropped on it from more than two feet high while incorporating it into a dramatic performance. The “Unlikely Attraction” competition challenges kids to imagine a theme park style attraction in an unexpected place and bring it to life using science. The two teams are now actively preparing to represent Baton Rouge on the world stage in May while fundraising to make it possible for the children to travel and compete. In order to do so, we must raise approximately $15,000 which will cover each student’s lodging, meals, and other related costs for the duration of the Global Finals. A GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/euvx3u-send-brcvpa-to-global-finals) has been established for anyone interested in supporting the efforts of our students. We appreciate your support!
